WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is getting ready to hand down consequential decisions on key aspects President Donald Trump’s agenda in the coming weeks, including a case about who is an American citizen and the extent of the president’s control of independent federal agencies.
But they already have rendered their verdict in some significant cases. The justice dramatically weakened he ability of minorities to elect candidates of their choice under the landmark Voting Rights Act and declared illegal President Donald Trump’s worldwide tariffs under an emergency powers law that had never been used that way before.
Decisions involving the political process, including the Voting Rights Act case and other Republican-led challenges to relaxed deadlines for mailed ballots and spending limits for political parties, could fuel criticism that the conservative majority, all named by Republican presidents, is more concerned about partisan politics than neutral principles of the law.
At the same time, the court seems to be setting some boundaries, including in the tariffs case, for especially aggressive aspects of Trump’s agenda. The ruling on a signature plank of his economic platform sparked an angry response from the president, who singled out some justices for highly personal criticism.
